Activity I: Vocabulary

Activity II: Reading

When you meet someone new, a common question is, “Where are you from?” This question helps people learn about each other’s background and culture. When someone asks you this, they usually want to know the country, city, or town where you were born or where you lived before.

For example, you can say, “I’m from Brazil,” or “I’m from a small town near Manila.” If you live in a different country now, you can say, “I’m from India, but I live in Canada now.” This helps people understand where your journey began and where you are now.

Another useful question is, “Where do you live?” This question is asking about your current location. You can answer, “I live in Tokyo,” or “I live in a small city near the coast.” Some people travel a lot, so their answers might change over time.

It’s also nice to ask, “What is your hometown like?” This lets people talk about their home culture, food, weather, and traditions. You might hear answers like, “My hometown is very quiet and green,” or “It’s famous for seafood and festivals.”

Talking about where you are from is a good way to start a friendly conversation. You can ask someone, “Are you from around here?” or “Is this your hometown?” These questions show interest and help build relationships.

If you meet someone from a different place, you can also ask, “What language do people speak there?” or “What kind of food is popular in your country?” These are friendly ways to learn and connect with others.

Try practicing this: “Where are you from?” “I’m from [your city or country].” It’s a simple but powerful way to share your story.

Activity III: Role Play

Instructions: Practice the dialogue with a partner. Take turns being A and B. Speak clearly and try to add your own details.

A: Hi, I’m Sarah. What’s your name?

B: I’m Ken. Nice to meet you, Sarah.

A: Nice to meet you too. Where are you from?

B: I’m from Tokyo, Japan. How about you?

A: I’m from Nairobi, Kenya.

B: That’s cool. Do you live here now?

A: Yes, I moved here last year. How about you?

B: I’ve been living here for six months.

A: What do you like about this place?

B: I like the food and the people. What about you?

A: I love the culture and the weather.

B: What languages do you speak?

A: I speak English and Swahili. You?

B: I speak Japanese and a little English.

A: That’s great! Let’s practice English together.

B: Sure! That sounds fun.
