Activity I: Vocabulary

Reading

Everyone has likes and preferences. We all enjoy different things, and that makes us unique. Some people like quiet activities such as reading, drawing, or walking in the park. Others prefer loud and exciting activities like going to concerts, playing sports, or dancing.

When talking about what you like, you can say, “I like watching movies,” or “I love cooking.” If you enjoy something very much, you can use the word “love.” For example, “I love coffee,” or “I love spending time with my friends.” If there is something you do not enjoy, you can say, “I don’t like loud music,” or “I don’t like driving at night.”

You can also talk about preferences. A preference means you like one thing more than another. You can say, “I prefer tea to coffee,” or “I prefer staying home to going out.” Another example is, “I prefer reading books to watching TV.” These sentences show your personal choices.

Many people have hobbies, or things they like to do in their free time. Some common hobbies are cooking, gardening, painting, playing an instrument, or exercising. When someone asks, “What are your hobbies?” you can answer, “My hobbies are painting and biking,” or “I like playing the guitar in my free time.”

Knowing how to talk about likes and preferences helps you connect with others. It can be useful when meeting new people, making friends, or even going on a date. Try asking questions like, “What do you like to do on weekends?” or “Do you prefer coffee or tea?” These questions start great conversations.

Now, think about the things you enjoy. What do you like? What do you prefer? Practice talking about them with a classmate or a friend.
